This makes no sense whatsoever. LS enrollment in 2010 was 147,000 students. In 2016 it was 110,951. But since 2010 only two law schools have closed, with Charlotte School of Law teetering on the edge. (Indiana Tech both opened AND closed within that time frame so it doesn't count). The ABA has no guts.

It's the rankings that do it. Most Schools cut class size rather than lower their standards too much bc the can't afford a rankings death spiral, then the true toilets began eating literal turds of students to keep afloat.

This is what is enraging. These schools are still staying afloat with drops of 100+ students in enrollment, plus offering more and more partial scholarships. This means they were absolutely gouging students in the 2006-2012 timeframe. And the ABA did (and continues to do) nothing.

but, there is also a legitimate concept that they should charge based on what the value of what they provide. then they can gouge away.

the problem, imo, is far more related to the bullshit employment and salary statistics they put out than to the cost of the degree itself.

They're not charging based on what they provide. They are taking advantage of a necessary signaling device that allows intelligent people to get a job, and then they are stealing those intelligent people's labor. It's fucking theft.

The value of what they provide is $5,000, because Barbri actually teaches you more relevant law. If you could get a big law job with an ivy degree plus bar passage these schools would not be able to charge 10% of what they do now.

i disagree that law school is unimportant or that it is worth less than barbri. the reason you can't get a big law job with your criteria is because the people with $ also disagree.

whether or not they are charging based on what they provide is arguable, but that's a free market question so long as the information is available to figure it out. they've poisoned that information.

A couple of other quasi-closures: Hamline and William Mitchell law schools in Minneapolis "merged" into one small school and Cooley closed its Ann Arbor campus.

But as others have said, this is reflected more in schools shrinking rather than closing. If you're running a bottom-tier law school, the rational move is to try to survive until the other bottom-tier schools in your area close, so that you can take their students.

A lot of them work for 5 years at ID/PI mills, or as ADAs making under $50K, until they burn out and do something else. One of the darkest statistics is that, despite the constant influx of law students, the average attorney age is getting older and older - the median age has gone from 39 to 49 from 1980-2005.

The current system *requires* a constant influx of low-wage young attorneys, who will quickly burn out and be replaced by other new grads, in order to support the salaries of the older lawyers.

It would help if they taught their students how to practice law, but that would make too much sense.

only $4K per year. They're not the problem. (Plus they're grads don't actually become lawyers anyway).

One law school for each state.

15 to 20 national/regional schools.

That should be good.

that doesn't work just as any government attempt at control over something it has no business controlling doesn't work.

what's important is to keep the bar exam sufficiently difficult to keep out people who will harm the profession through their stupidity or ignorance

then let the free market do what it do

I think actually they got sued over this back in the 90s and actually can't do this (lawyers claim it's antitrust issues or something)

the problem with the aba doing this is that it may overly infringe on a state's ability to supply enough lawyers for itself.

States are not required to follow ABA guidelines, and really there's no reason they should. The ABA is a dismal TTT in decline and is shedding members at an accelerating rate.

Charlotte School of Law is admitting retards, flunking them out, and then READMITTING them the next year as repeat 1Ls for the tuition gravy:

Blevins knows of 20 students who flunked out and were immediately readmitted—as first-year students. “They didn’t get to keep any credits, even if they passed the classes,” he says, adding that out of those 20 readmitted, only three avoided getting kicked out again.

Arizona Summit Law School (a rancid TTT that loves changing its name) has a disclaimer at the top of its home page to try to avoid getting sued into oblivion:

https://www.azsummitlaw.edu/index.php

"This website is only one of the resources you should use in making a decision about whether and where to go to law school. The content in large part highlights the positive aspects and purposeful nature of our institution. Before you invest in a legal education, please perform your due diligence with respect to us or any other institution to ensure you make the choice that is best for you."
