Just wondering because I haven't saved shit ($45K) and I'll probably inherit that amount at some point in the far far future when dad passes.

750k, well

Assuming you retire at 65 and live another 20 years that's $37,500 a year.

Think you can live on that?

Of course if you live past 85 it becomes even less.

Assuming heís also getting 2-2.5k per month from maxing out SS for 30+ years, then itís fine. I know we should all assume it will be cut but SS solvency is not so dire that itís likely benefits will be completely cut off or cut down to substantially less than current rates, dumb libertarian trolling aside. Also 750k should easily throw off 25k in interesting before taxes if heís managing conservatively. So if he can live cheap in his early retirement he should be able to maintain a decent lifestyle into his 90s with say 1M at the start of retirement. Lol at how heís totally fine inheriting 750k and blowing it all on himself and leaving nothing for his son.

Put it in Roth IRA for compound interest and you will really see it build, esp right before you retire.

Why do you already have your dad passed away and his money in your bank account? That's terrible.

You must not think much about your father if you're already counting down the days until you inherit his money.

I am not thinking that.

However, my dad just did a whole bank and asset thing w me because he's morbid now since my mom died. As a consequence I was privy to some information I may be able to apply with respect to planning.

Frankly, I am a little concerned about how much emphasis he placed on a life insurance policy of $400K that expires when he turns 84. I don't like to think of him thinking about that and wish I didn't know about that, tbh.

On the life insurance, if you put up some more premium dollars it should last after 84 (I assume it is some sort of variable universal life that gets expensive as one ages).

$750k is both an excellent AND mediocre retirement savings at 55. It really depends on what your plans are post-retirement.

On one hand, if you plan to stay in the US, it's only an ok retirement savings. Not great, but enough to probably last you 30+ years if invested right. However, a $750k retirement outside of the US is a tremendous amount of money that will go very far in places like Southeast Asia, South America, etc. It really depends on what your goals are.

would be fun. I could write poems, teach bullshit in local college, travel around. Wife wouldn't like it as those are dirty jungle Asians, not classy Asians.

So the $750K is between the two of you? Includes retirement accounts in her name, etc.?

Instead of going to Costa Rica, you should stick that money into a Roth IRA. What youíre doing is incredibly irrreponsible.

You're a retard for counting on that.

It's a lot more than most people have but whether it's enough depends on a realistic estimate of your lifestyle/COL at the time of retirement. Which you aren't in a position to know.

$45k is your total savings or your 401k/retirement account?

my savings is shit pure shit. I have about $45K in an IRA and then some 401K profit sharing thing I don't pay attention to as it hasn't fully vested yet. then some checking account stuff which is about $20K then some home equity at about $80K then a college tuition thing that's fully funded for four years of college for the kid. I have about $40K in student loans left. So, yeah, I know, I'm fucked.

get on to fixing this up quick

you need to spend a couple of years saving every penny, getting rid of all debts, and kickstarting your retirement accounts

youíve left it late but you can still fix this up

Also, why assume retirement at 55? Does anyone, even high paid wage cucks, retire at 55? That's just cops and fire fighters.

I'm sure a lot of people "retire" at 55 because they become unemployable

I'm not, dude. Jeez. I expect to retire in late 60s w some work here and there indefinitely as long as I can manage. The 55 number was a ballpark of god willing how much longer I have the ole boy.

Real talk, at 55 if you plan to work until full Social Security (lol, right--but the age anyway), which means 70, $750,000 will reasonably be $2 million by that time. More if you keep putting in money. That's certainly more than reasonable to retire on, especially if you own a house, and more than most people retire on today, although definitely you won't be living in ultra-luxury or anything like that.
